Busylizzie Art at Tyca Festival

Over the last few weeks Liz Hutchin of Busylizzie Art has been working with Jenny Keogh Artist under the umbrella of GoCreate Taunton in collaboration with ArtsTaunton TheTycaFestival, Somerset Wildlife Trust and poet Jack Clementine on the FindingTheLostWords project to celebrate the work of Robert McFarlane & Jackie Morris.

We have provided outdoor creative workshops, encouraging primary school children from St James Church School, Taunton, St George’s Catholic Primary School and Bishop Henderson Primary School, to capture visually, ‘a sense of place’ of their forestschool / environmental area… There are five massive 2m x 1.5m vibrant canvases and hundreds of beautiful, observational drawings created and these will be on show at Queen’s College on Thursday 24th October and then at Taunton Library from 28th October until mid November…

Busylizzie Art part of Go Create team at Taunton Feast Festival this weekend…

All free creative printing activities provided by Liz, Jenny and Adam of Go Create Taunton at yesterday’s incredibly busy Feast Festival on Castle Green Taunton…

Jenny and Liz cut vegetables for printing on backgrounds rolled with colourful inks whilst Adam encouraged visitors to paint in Perspex plates which he fed through his hand operated printing press, creating stunning monoprints.

Busylizzie Art sharing Exhibition at Taunton Library from Monday March 4th…

The last four weeks have seen a great flurry of inspired creating at Busylizzie “HQ” following two separate weeks spent in the French Alpes.

It began with observation of tracks and ridges formed in the snows surface seen from above via chairlifts in Valmeinier and Valloire then was fuelled by a second week of stunning blue skies and incredible landscapes in and around the Ubaye Valley…

I created a printing block initially and experimented with colour and background in an attempt to capture something of the motion, movement, momentum, shape of the carved tracks made when gliding down the mountain… I added representation of coloured routes, pistes, and could feel the life beginning to emerge, but the sense of place was missing…it could be any ski track…

Working from photos, I tried to capture shapes of the skyline, but then inspired by Suzie of Rocket &Co, thought I’d try adding some actual map sections…and yes! It worked.

The exhibition contains eight, no nine original new works and three duplicate prints of one of these…

All are in the exhibition for two weeks at the library, then will go to the Creative Innovation Centre Taunton to be exhibited as part of the show by art class participants in April.

New Banners for 2018

Four new banners have been created by Go Create Taunton artists Busylizzie and Jenny Keogh to commemorate the Women’s vote centenary.

Funded by Heritage lottery money, research by Andrew Knutt revealed a wealth of background information and posters and banners of the Women’s Suffrage movement dating back to 1832…

Painted on traditional canvas, the new banners were designed to reflect the colours and the wording and organisations of 2018, but to encompass a modern and local feel. The four banners were presented at the December meeting of the The Taunton Creatives Club where members also created a variety of posters to mark the event.

Andrew Knutt had created a presentation detailing the history of the Women’s Vote campaign which forms part of a week long celebration of one hundred years since women were first allowed to vote in a general election…

At the December meeting of our Creatives Club, held at The Creative Innovation Centre, Taunton the gathered creatives were inspired to produce a series of modern day posters encouraging the women’s cause and celebrating the long struggle from 1832 to 1918 during which many women suffered in order to obtain suffrage; the right to vote in the country’s elections. A great triumph – but not without casualties…

Cabbages and colours…

October, Autumn, season of mists and mellow fruitfulness…and pink tinged leafed cabbage-style flowers…

Having been given a beautiful bouquet of pink/green cabbage flowers with pungent pink asiatic lilies as a birthday gift, it seemed a sin to just arrange them in a vase, and admire them in passing…the colours, the shapes, the strength of stalk was too much to just look at! I had to paint them…

Beginning with a quick pencil sketch, trying to pick out the contrasting tones which created the form, then an even more quick press-print block made with an extinct biro…a collection of work began to emerge.

After the prints and drying-off sheets, came the inspiration to turn the cabbage head on its head and look closely from the underside…what a dramatic colour study emerged.

All in all I was so pleased with the drawing, the prints, the drying-off sheets and the painting, that i decided to capture in photographs and so create this diary entry – which is really for November, but Christmas got in the way…here it is now, in all its glory!

The “wedding of the year” from ‘save-the-dates’ to venue decoration…

PART ONE – Save the dates

Planning began in October 2016 for the wedding of Charlotte Smith to Thomas Sargent, with the concept of an autumn theme for 2018.

As Liz, of Busylizzie Art, I met with this newly engaged couple over coffee, to begin the process of finding out what mattered to them and what kind of wedding they would like. The outdoors featured highly – both enjoyment of walking and exploring plus playing competitive sport, so a theme would need to encompass this. The colours were going to be important here as wishy-washy, pastel pale would not do! The strength of the autumnal palette was calling – burgundy, russet and orange began to emerge as favourites…

So having narrowed it down to leaves rather than flowers, the painting could begin…

Once the chosen leaves were painted, design ideas for the ‘Save-the-dates’ could begin and several were played about with before settling on a simple calendar super-imposed over a single leaf, with a red heart encircling the ‘6’…

Torn by hand, then enclosed in recycled brown card, the tiny ‘Save-the-dates’ were wrapped & tied with burgundy satin ribbon and garden string…

PART 2 of “Wedding of the year” coming soon!!

…and the excitement is nearing its peak!

When, as the artist, you have designed the detail of the ‘look’ for a wedding right from the first ‘Save-the-date’ down to the last announcement board and jar of flowers, the anticipation in the preceding week is almost as heightened as that of the Bride and Groom themselves. When the artist is also the Groom’s mother – it is off the scale!

Almost two years in the planning, this first of a generation wedding is leading the way in the Sargent/Hutchin/Smith families. It heralds Thomas & Charlotte’s adventures together as a married couple and is going to have an autumnal rustic theme.

I am very much looking forward to publishing a full set of photos documenting the artistic creations and the whole event to demonstrate the range of items I can produce!!

New set of signs in progress…

Busylizzie Art at The Rectory Care Home has embarked on a new set of signs!

The manager’s bid to make this home a kind of boutique care home has really taken off with this recently begun project…

Angela’s vision is that the whole feel of the home is special, and feels not like an institution but a private house. Commercially produced signs are therefore a no, no so this is where Busylizzie Art comes in, producing unique, hand-painted way-finding signage and signs for rooms and bedroom / front doors…

Liz, of Busylizzie Art, has begun work on 25 new door signs which incorporate a bed image and the word bedroom in a variety of colour ways to blend in with the decor but to stand out enough for the residents to be able to see clearly…
